Hot Water Runs Out Fast? Fixes From a Cheap Part to Going Tankless

If your shower turns cold after five minutes, something changed — either the heater is failing or your household outgrew it.

A broken dip tube

The dip tube sends cold water to the bottom of the tank. When it cracks, cold water mixes at the top and you get lukewarm water quickly. Cheap part, common failure on units 10–15 years old.

A dead lower element (electric)

Electric heaters have two elements. When the lower one fails, only the top third of the tank heats. Classic symptom: hot for a few minutes, then cold.

Sediment

A tank half full of scale is a tank half full of hot water. A flush helps if it's caught early.

Thermostat set too low

Check for 120°F. Higher settings scald; lower settings run out sooner.

The tank is just too small

A 40-gallon tank supports about two back-to-back showers. Bigger family, soaking tub or rain shower head? You've outgrown it. Options: a larger tank, a hybrid heat pump unit, or a tankless water heater that never runs out and cuts energy use 20–30%.

Our water heater repair techs will diagnose it first — sometimes it's a $40 part, sometimes it's time to upgrade. Call (888) 480-9811 for a same-day visit.
