Sink Drains Slowly? Why It Happens and What Actually Works

A slow sink is the polite version of a clog. Left alone, it becomes a sink full of standing water on the morning you're running late. Here's what's going on underneath and how to deal with it.

What's clogging it

Bathroom sinks collect hair, toothpaste and soap scum in the P-trap and the branch line. Kitchen sinks collect grease that cools and hardens, plus coffee grounds and food particles that grease glues together. In Florida, hard water scale narrows the pipe and gives all of it something to cling to.

Why chemical drain cleaners are a bad idea

Lye and acid cleaners generate heat that can soften PVC and pit metal pipes. They rarely dissolve a full clog — they sit on top of it, which makes the plumber's job dangerous when the trap is opened. Skip them.

What to try first

When it's time for professional drain cleaning

If more than one drain is slow, if the toilet gurgles when the sink drains, or if the clog keeps coming back, the problem is past the trap — in the branch line or the main sewer. That's a job for cable clearing or hydro jetting. Our drain cleaning techs camera-inspect the line so you know whether it's a one-time clog or a sign of a bigger sewer line problem.
