Water Dripping From the Ceiling: What to Do in the First 10 Minutes

A drip from the ceiling means water is already pooling above the drywall. Ceilings can hold a surprising amount before they let go, so move quickly.

The first 10 minutes

1. Turn off the water. Main shut-off first. If the drip is under an upstairs bathroom, shut the fixture valves too.
2. Relieve the ceiling. Put a bucket under the drip and poke a small hole with a screwdriver at the lowest point of the bulge. A controlled leak beats a collapsed ceiling.
3. Kill the power to that room at the breaker if water is near lights or fans.
4. Move furniture and electronics and lay towels.

Where the water is coming from

Most ceiling leaks trace to one of these: a toilet wax ring, a tub or shower drain, a burst supply line, a failed water heater in the attic, an AC condensate line, or roof/flashing failure. A plumber can quickly rule the plumbing in or out.

We isolate the source, make the pipe or fixture repair, and take moisture readings so you know whether the drywall can dry in place. If the water heater is in the attic, we'll check its drain pan and recommend replacement if it's failing.
